PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

Education and Legal Services- Telephone counselors provide legal information and education to tenants from 9 - 5, Monday - Friday. At landlord/tenant workshops every Wednesday evening and Saturday morning, tenants can learn more about Texas housing laws and meet with attorneys about specific concerns. Low-income clients who have defensible eviction cases can be represented in court or helped to mediate an agreement by an HCC attorney . There are no fees for these services.  HCC’s pro bono legal program has been cited by the State Bar of Texas for outstanding service.

Home Power Social Services- Counseling, emergency rental, utility and relocation assistance, referrals and support groups are provided to individuals and families who are in danger of becoming homeless. Home Power services are designed to prevent homelessness - resolve crises, support positive life decisions, encourage self-sufficiency, and provide ongoing skill building opportunities.

STEPS: Short Term Housing Program - Homeless families with children are housed for up to four months at no charge in their own apartments. While in residence, families receive counseling, skills training and referrals to meet their specific needs. The primary goals for all families are to stabilize their lives and be able to obtain and maintain affordable permanent housing.

Home Again Long Term Transitional Housing - Individuals and families who are homeless can be in the Home Again program for up to 18 months if continuous progress is being made toward their goals. During that time they receive rent and utilities to live in apartments in the community. In addition, they are given the case management services needed to acquire skills to become employed and self-sufficient. This program has received national recognition by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Learning is Family Enrichment (LIFE) -  LIFE provides drug prevention programming, life skills education, and parenting support in a multi-family setting. Services are offered to families in all HCC programs and other agencies. Program participants gather for fourteen sessions, sharing an evening meal in family groups, followed by skills training in age-based groupings.
